As those of you who gather in Barcelona every June know very well, the Sónar Festival has ended this weekend and we’re still recovering from all the amazing concerts and DJ sets we witnessed. While we know our opinion may be a little bit biased, we can’t stop highlighting the amazing performance by our label-head and Buraka member Branko, who took the Red Bull Music Academy stage by storm alongside MC Kalaf with his usual unpredictable cocktail of global beats and heavy bass. Luckily for us, we don’t have to reminisce anymore, as RBMA Radio comes to the rescue with an integral recording of his performance, which you can find embedded below. If you move to his beats, it will have the opposite effect of a rain dance.

Enchufada started 2013 with a bang by introducing a brand new series of biweekly free downloads called Upper Cuts. Over the past six months we gave away ten tracks by an assorted collection of label veterans and fresh faces, gradually expanding our musical family and giving something back to the listeners who made everything possible. Now, as the first Upper Cuts season draws to an end, we compile the bangers, dancefloor fillers and peak-time bombs into a single digital package.

Starting back in January with Buraka Som Sistema founding member and label-head Branko’s hectic collaboration with Njena Reddd Foxxx, the series included tasty cuts from Enchufada repeat offenders such as Wildlife! and Slap In The Bass, bass music newcomers Elisa Bee, Captain Steel, Surfing Leons and BIZT, RBMA alumni and electronic pop dreamers :PAPERCUTZ, as well as Buraka themselves and founding member Riot on a rare solo outing.

Ranging from DJ-friendly tropical bass bangers to epic tribal synthscapes, Upper Cuts Vol. 1 also includes the track that kickstarted this year’s hottest new genre Zouk Bass, alongside new-school kuduro joints, weird technoid grime hybrids and all sorts of exclusive futuristic club music. Dare to venture inside our homage to soundsystem culture, where we inspired ourselves in the age-old practice of pressing – or cutting – your own dubplates of exclusive material and inverted that logic to make it fit the Internet age.

‘Upper Cuts Volume 1′ is now available on all major digital stores such as Boomkat, Beatport, Junodownload and iTunes.

Many know Blaya as the provocative dancer and MC who accompanies Buraka Som Sistema on stage, capturing the attention of the whole world with her endless energy and captivating presence. After accepting the challenge from Henrique Amaro (Antena 3) and Branko (Buraka Som Sistema), Blaya dives headfirst into her solo debut.

The lead single “Superfresh”is the freshest provocation of the Portuguese music scene. The night carrousel, the perfect outfit, the lipgloss in your bag, the crazy beat, an “in your face” lyric and the physical impossibility of remaining indifferent. Bouncing beats, hot stories and exotic melodies in an unlikely mashup between electronic mashup and wild Instagram photos. This is the current moment. The current history. Tonight’s beat. Superfresh is the music of today.

Eu Quero Mais(Portuguese for ‘I want more’) is Blaya’s exploration of the feelings in a relationship. The night goes on, the temperature starts dropping and a confession is heard stating the desire for more. Blaya translates what is going on while texts, whatsapp calls and social network messages are exchanged, in a danceable movement inside a room where the air becomes unreasonably hot. In Eu Quero Mais, R&B vibes get blended with confessional voices speaking of hot nights spent together. Eu Quero Mais, or how to be informally sentimental.

Listen to the EP on the Optimus Discos website.

Blaya is the most recent confirmation for Optimus Alive’13 Festival. She performs on July 14th on the Optimus Clubbing stage.

As the warm summer days are finally here and Branko’s instantly memorable single Time Out feat. Orlando Santos is dominating radio playlists and pool parties everywhere, the Buraka Som Sistema founding member reached out to some of his favorite producers to help him put a new spin on his tropical pop anthem. Serving as the opener for his ‘Drums, Slums & Hums’, this track showed the world a new side of the veteran producer, who presented his mixtape as a musical resumé of sorts, condensing ten years of musical growth into a cohesive and forward-thinking piece.

Summertime calls for relaxing as much as partying, so it’s no wonder that the garage don DJ Q was called in to turn the track into an uplifting dancefloor smasher. Adding playful bouncing basslines, 2-step beats and a quintessentially British attitude, the Huddersfield native twists Branko’s original into a breezy track that’s bound to become a staple of after-hours beachside DJ sets.

Enchufada’s very own Voxels stepped up to prove why they deserve their reputation as house connoisseurs. Funky basslines, epic strings and smooth synths get layered over a four-to-the-floor beat in true Voxels fashion, taking Orlando Santo’s smooth lyrics straight to the club, and showing the world why their unmistakable ‘bachelor house’ sound has been wowing crowds and critics alike.

Perhaps better known for collaborating with MC Zebra Katz on their ‘Winter Titty EP’, Lithuanian producer Boyfriend is a force to be reckoned with. Inspired by the slow and sweaty rhythms of moombahton, he puts his trademark tropical twist on everything he touches and Branko’s latest single is no exception. Keeping in line with the smoothness of the original, Boyfriend layers tropical percussion and soft synths over Orlando Santos’ dreamy lyrics with stellar results.

To cap things off on a high note, Branko also provides a fresh twist to the single by going straight to the point on the new Radio Edit, a shorter version of the original track that has been warming up the airwaves since it was released in April. This brand new EP also includes another stand-out track from the ‘Drums, Slums & Hums’ mixtape, the Roses Gabor-featuring Waves, a dancefloor-oriented cut with a big bouncing beat that finds balance with the London singer’s seductive hushed tones.

As you probably know by now, we’ve been following the DZC Crew very closely since this whole Zouk Bass craze started. Producers like DJ Kuimba, 2Pekes and Matabaya are making the world stand to attention and notice their fresh bass-heavy take on the sexy rhythms of tarraxa – or, as we like to call it, the Zouk Bass style – and their latest track with the American producer JSTJR is no exception.

Bazouk is a hypnotizing track filled with spaced-out synths and an addictively disjointed beat, forcing listeners to shake their booty to the slow, sensual beat that’s lighting the blogosphere on fire ever since the Buraka DJ set on the Boiler Room. You can stream and download this new collaboration for free below, and you can also listen to an amazing mix by the American producer who selected tracks from the DZC collective, as well as Riot’s Marka remix and tons of fresh zouk bass bangers to liven up your afternoon.

To those who haven’t been paying attention to TV, radio or social networks in the last few days, Moche is going to celebrat its first anniversary with a huge party in Lisbon tomorrow, June 8th. As those who’ve met us on the dancefloors know very well, huge parties are synonymous with Buraka DJs performances, which is exactly what will happen on the newly innaugurated Moche Room, celebrated in MEO Arena (former Pavilhão Atlântico).

Besides Branko and Riot’s heavyweight record selections, the party will stretch for 12 whole hours to the sound of more Enchufada artists and some old friends as well. The dynamic duo Voxels brings the house flavour and the funk heat to the mix, while BIZT will be taking dancers on a percussive voyage through tropical-scented electronic music, both contributing to prepare the crowd to receive the unpredictable Melé, who will be proving why artists such as Diplo keep naming him as Britain’s most promissing young DJ. Finally, the impressive skills of turntable acrobat DJ Ride will put an end to the evening with his colorful cocktail of beats and breaks for every taste.

To win tickets for the event all you need is to be a Moche client, have between 16 and 25 years old and participate in the ticket giveaway on the brand’s Facebook page. What are you waiting for?

It’s been two years since we’ve heard new stuff from British producer Mumdance, who broke into the scene with a an exciting take on grime which borrowed electro’s more expansive sounds. Seeing as the grime scene has been undergoing a full revitalization process, with its key players experimenting more and more outside the genre’s comfort zone, the timing seems perfect for the Brighton native’s trademark sounds to come back into play.

Seemingly revitalized after his hiatus period, Mumdance now presents thirteen new tracks that showcase a more minimal and unpredictable sound with his new mixtape ‘Twists and Turns’. Including several collaborations with Logos, the returning producer caters to the club dancers and headphone listeners alike, and you can stream it below or download the whole thing for free by liking his Facebook page or sharing the mixtape on Facebook or Twitter.

If you’re among the lucky ones who’ve had the chance to watch Liverpool wonderkid Melé playing live – either on our Hard Ass Sessions residency or on one of his many tour dates – then you know how much energy the young DJ can put into his performance. If you live in or around Lisbon you are probably making plans to see him and Buraka DJs rock the MOCHE Room next Saturday, but if you still need convincing you should check out the latest episode of BBC Radio 1Xtra‘s always surprising Diplo & Friends show, featuring none other than Melé himself. True to form, he mixes everything from classic house to southern hip-hop, tossing in some grime and dub bangers without even breaking a sweat, fully justifying Diplo’s introduction where he points the young artist as his favorite British DJ.

Follow this link to stream the whole mix at BBC’s website and start your week dancing.

We’ve talked about Buraka Som Sistema’s recent trip to Red Bull Studios London to start the recording a brand new album, in which they joined forces with some powerful producers and singers to to help them take their groundbreaking sound to a new level. Besides artists like Dismantle, Dub Phizix or Roses Gabor, the guys have been collaborating with the incredible singer Yadi, who defines herself as a “tiny creature with a giant roar”. We couldn’t agree more.

Here’s a quick Q&A to let you guys know a little bit more about her:

For everyone who isn’t familiar with Yadi yet, tell us a little bit about yourself: who are you, where do you come from and what do you do?

I’m a tiny creature with a giant roar! I’d live on the stage if I could because it’s place where I can create a little world of my own. Anyone is welcome but they’d have to keep up! I love fashion and the arts. If I see an interesting face on the tube I get my pen out and start to draw! I like listening to people’s stories and meet someone new everyday.

How did the hookup with Buraka happen? How’s the experience of working with the guys?

I met João through Johan Hugo from The Very Best, who is producing my album. He and I have a great musical connection. He knows the Buraka guys well and thought that I would get on with them too – he was right! I hooked up with João to write in London for his project ‘Branko’ and we had a great session so we decided we’d get together in Lisbon too. In the meantime I had a session with the whole of Buraka at the Red Bull Studio’s in London – I was really sick but I wasn’t going to miss a day in the studio with them so I covered it up with Lemsip and lipstick! We wrote a Zouk inspired tune, which I think our fans are going to love.

What artists or bands first inspired you to get into music? What are your all time greatest musical references?

I was totally inspired by Michael Jackson’s sense of rhythm – especially in his voice. He was mesmerizing – I used to try and copy him all the time. I’ll also never forget when my father played me Patti Smith’s Horses when I was about 7 or 8 – the lyric ‘Jesus died for somebody’s sins but not mine’ stuck in my mind and inspired me to start writing lyrics in my teens. I always reference Malian and Gnawa music, which I’ve loved from a young age. I try to interpret the rhythms and trance like nature of the riffs to inspire my own. I also love soul and hip hop and more ‘street’ sounding music – I mean that literally – music made by kids in the street that has an instinctive feel to it. I guess that’s the best way to describe my music. The references are always in the back of my mind but when you get in a room with someone and there is a really good feeling, the thinking almost stops.

How was your experience in Lisbon? Was this your first time here? Tell us your thoughts on the city.

I love Lisbon! It was my first time in the city. Every road is like a painting. The food is delicious, the people are warm – I could easily live there. One night we went to see live Fado music being played in a local restaurant – when we arrived the chef was singing – she sent shivers down my spine. There was something special going on in that room – everyone was silenced. Then on the last night Buraka played a gig to a crazy audience. I joined them on stage for the encore, which was amazing – their live show is mad! We stayed out all night and I got to see the party side of Lisbon too.

Besides recording with Buraka, what other musical projects do you have in the works? What can we expect to hear from you soon?

I have been working with a guy called Shift Key in London, he’s a really talented producer and we’re working on a super cool new tune. I’m also playing a festival this year with a group of musicians, we’re kind of a collective but I can’t tell you who it involves yet… It’s going to be pretty different! My album will be out late this year.
